What is Breast Lift?
Sooner or later, millions of women all over the world experience sagging breasts. Significant weight loss, childbirth, ageing and gravity are widely known factors causing drooping breasts. Fortunately, there is a solution to this problem: breast uplift surgery also known as mastopexy. Therefore, thousands of women are undergoing breast uplift surgery to perk up their breasts and regain their self confidence.
Breast lift without implants is performed by plastic surgeons in order to fix drooping or sagging breasts. During the breast uplift procedure, excess skin is removed, surrounding tissues are tightened so that breasts are lifted and reshaped by the surgeon. Areola and nipple is typically repositioned. Breast uplift procedure can be combined with breast enlargement surgery so that fuller breasts can be attained.
There are several techniques for breast uplift surgery. These techniques are based upon different types of incisions and they vary from the popular anchor shaped ones to the doughnut shaped ones. For some, extensive incisions might be required whereas others might be more suitable for smaller and less pervasive incisions. Patients may experience some bruising and slight swelling afterwards but they ease over time. Patients will be prescribed painkillers to control any discomfort due to the surgery.
How Breast Lift is Performed
There are several techniques for carrying out this procedure but the most common one involves the plastic surgeon making three incisions that form an anchor shape. These incisions enable the surgeon to remove the excess skin and move the nipples and areolas to a higher position. The skin around the pigmented part around the breast known as areola mammae is piled up. Patients are applied intravenous sedation and general anaesthesia. After incisions are made, breast tissue is lifted and reformed to improve breast contour and firmness. The nipple and areola are taken to a normal, more youthful height. If required, enlarged areolas will be reduced. Excess breast skins are removed in order to gain elasticity. After reshaping the breasts, the skin is closed by sutures, skin adhesives and/or surgical tape.
Results of Breast Lift
Patients are advised to get plenty of rest and take things easy for some time after surgery. They are also suggested to wear sports bra and avoid exercise or other activities for some time. Recovery time varies from one surgery to the other and depends on the individual patient’s circumstances. Some patients recover faster than others whereas other patients may take their time. The results of breast lift surgery are immediately visible. Gradually, post-surgical swelling resolves and incision lines fade. After mastopexy surgery, patients can return to work within a week depending on the type of job they do. It is usually expected to resume most of daily activities, including some form of mild exercise after a couple of weeks. The results last for a long time but are not permanent. The ageing process and gravity cannot be stopped forever and they do cause the breasts to drop. The breasts lose tone and elasticity so this procedure will need to be repeated at some point in the future. Patient’s age and overall health affect the results of this surgery.
Limitations of Breast Lift
Mastopexy surgery does not have significant limitations however it should be known that breast lift scars will be permanent. If patient wants larger breasts as well, breast augmentation can be considered with mastopexy surgery that will give fullness to the upper half of the breast. Patients with very large breasts need to undergo breast reduction surgery in order to avoid second boob uplift surgery.
Risks of Breast Lift
Mastopexy is a safe procedure but like all forms of surgery, it does have a small amount of risk. A common side effect is feeling sick after general anaesthesia, soreness and bruising. The following complications may occur although they are rare:
Reaction to anaesthesia
Protracted healing
Slight risk of deep vein thrombosis
Excessive bleeding
Severe pain
Under sensitive or oversensitive nipples
Internal bruising or haematoma
Keloids – thickened, angry red scars
Side effects are temporary and relatively mild. These may include nausea following anaesthesia, scarring, burning sensation in the nipples and soreness and bruising.
Contraindications of Breast Lift
There are not any absolute contraindications found for breast lift surgery in literature. Yet, one related contraindication is for future pregnancies, since lactation and subsequent involution further change the shape of the breast.
Here’s an expected typical schedule of breast lift surgery in Turkey:
Day 1
You arrive at the hospital in the morning to meet your doctor in person. The plastic surgeon will explain you the surgery in detail and examine you before he advises on your proportional breast appearance that would fit you best. You will have an opportunity to discuss the preferences and expectations from your surgery. If you would like to proceed, you will be asked to pay your remaining balance and sign consent forms. You will then have your tests and checks to confirm your suitability for surgery. The procedure usually lasts for two to three hours. Within an hour after surgery, anaesthesia will ease and you will regain consciousness. Your doctor performs initial check-up and you stay at the hospital on the first night of surgery.
Day 2
This will be the healing and rehabilitation day for you. Your doctor will perform the second check up in the morning before your discharge from the hospital. You will be advised on your medication and provided instructions on the dressing routine and using the medical bra. You will rest in your hotel room for the rest of the day.
Day 3
You are advised to continue resting in your room on your third day. You should avoid heavy activities but may take a walk or go out for dinner. If you feel well enough, you may go shopping or attend city sightseeing tours in order to explore the city.
Day 4
You visit the private clinic of the surgeon for final check-up, removal of drainage and change of dressing. Your doctor gives you detailed information on medication and the types of activities you can get involved in over the course of your recovery period. You will be ready to go back home after your fourth day in Turkey.
