What are tuberous breasts?

Tuberous breasts, also known as tubular breasts, is the name of a congenital deformity caused by a fibrous band that constricts the development of the breast, preventing it from developing both horizontally and vertically and causing a tube-like appearance. This condition is characterized by small, narrow, and elongated breasts with a higher-than-normal breast crease and often a bulging appearance of the areola due to herniation of breast tissue.

In addition to these features, one or more of the following may also accompany tuberous breasts:

  • Breasts that are too far apart
  • A narrow breast base
  • A larger-than-normal areola
  • Underdeveloped breasts
  • Sagging breasts
  • Herniation of breast tissue
  • Asymmetry between breasts

Tuberous breast correction surgery involves several steps, including reduction of the nipple and herniation, widening the lower part of the breast using existing breast tissue, breast augmentation with implants, and correcting the asymmetry between breasts.

How is tuberous breast correction surgery done?

During the surgery, an incision is made around the areola. Depending on the size of the breasts, degree of sagging, and shape of the areola, another vertical incision from the nipple down or an inverted-T pattern incision may be required. Breast implants may be placed under the chest muscle or the muscle membrane, depending on the anatomy of the breast tissue.

The healing period for tuberous breast correction surgery is similar to breast lift surgeries (mastopexy). After a recovery period of 7-10 days, patients can resume their daily activities.
